Maine Field Hockey splits road games

The University of Maine Field Hockey team was on the road on Friday and Sunday afternoon, first with a conference battle at #19 Albany before moving into non-conference action at Hofstra on Sunday.

At Alumni Turf in Albany, New York on Friday- The #19 ranked Albany Great Danes dominated Maine throughout, sending the Black Bears to their second straight conference loss 3-1. Albany (7-3, 3-0 America East) took a lead they wouldn’t relinquish on a tally by Alison Smisdom, her 12th goal of the season at 3:36 of the first quarter. They got the game winner at 4:15 of the second on a marker by Axelle Werbrouck, and led 2-0 at the half holding the visitors to just one shot on goal. Charlotte Triggs ended the scoring for the hosts late in the third quarter, before Maine put one on the board with just over five minutes left to play in the contest by Olivia Geniti her first of the year. Mallory Drayer made eight saves in net in the defeat for the Bears. Smisdom and Triggs both had a goal and an assist for the Great Danes, and Lara Behn made two saves in the cage. Albany had a 14-5 advantage in shots attempted, 11-4 on net.

At the Hofstra Field Hockey Complex in Hempstead, New York on Sunday- Brynn Dzengelewski scored a game winning goal late in the first quarter, leading Maine to a 4-1 non-conference win over Hofstra out of the Colonial Athletic Association. The Black Bears Kate Richardson scored the first goal of the game, and later added one 11:07 into the second quarter. Bhreagh Kennedy got the other tally in the victory. Drayer made four saves in net. Silvia Vetter had the lone score for the Pride, as they fell to 4-6 on the season. Maine is now 5-6 overall (2-2 in the conference) and will get back into America East play on Friday at 3 p.m. when they host Bryant.
