PVHS girls soccer improves to 9-0 with shutout win

October 2, 2023

In Calais Saturday, six different PVHS players scored to help lift the visitors to a 9-0 girls soccer win over the Blue Devils.

If the team had tired legs, it didn’t show early. PVHS started one of their longer trips of the season Saturday morning, just 12 hours after returning home from their game against Woodland the evening before. Lila Cummings got the ball rolling, as she scored in the lower left corner from an Ellie Austin pass just three and a half minutes in. This would start a series of five goals in just over five minutes for the Howlers. The second came from an assist by Lauren Veino, as she raced up the left sideline and sent a pretty pass to Rylee Moulton behind the Calais back line. Moulton scored top-shelf, over the goalkeepers arms.  Exactly a minute later, Austin sent a pass across the box where outside midfielder Ashlyn St. Cyr finished with an opposite foot goal. A pass from Cummings in the middle to the left wing allowed Austin to score her own far post goal. Moulton would get a breakaway on a counter-attack, as she went one on one with the goalie and calmly pushed it in the left corner for the 5-0 lead.
Senior reserve Brooke Champion would score the next two goals for the Lady Howlers, and both came from a Cummings assist. A direct kick from near the corner of the 18 by Cummings was quickly kicked out of the air by Champion and into the back of the net. Brooke scored her second when she took a ground pass from Lila and made a quick move past the keeper to the open net. Junior Allie LeBlanc scored her first goal of the year, converting a penalty kick with about 10 minutes remaining. The final goal occurred when Cummings, who finished the game with four assists, sent a chip across the goal box with her opposite foot to Austin who bodied the ball into the open part of the goal.
PVHS improved to 9-0 on the season, and will face Central in East Corinth on Tuesday. Brooklynn Raymond and Shay Ireland combined to save both shots on goal.
Calais now sits at 0-8 on the year, and will host Bucksport on Monday. Kayleigh Scott was busy in net, stopping 24 of 46 shots for the Lady Blue Devils.
