Victoria Dungey scored her first collegiate goal that turned out to be the game winner in the second half on Sunday afternoon, as the University of Maine defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) 2-0 in America East women’s soccer action at Lubetkin Field in Newark, New Jersey.
Julie Lossius assisted on the winner by Dungey that came with 33:39 left to play. Lossius did some great work on the left hand side of the box to keep the play alive, and then found Dungey at the top of the circle around the 18 and Dungey fired it high past the diving NJIT goaltender Samantha Constantine. The insurance goal in the 80th minute started with another play down the left side that found Abby Kraemer just outside the 18. Kraemer had her first shot blocked, fired again that was stopped from crossing the goal line by a Highlanders defender, but Abbey Thornton was there to scoop up the rebound and would deposit it into the back of the net.
Kira Kutzinski had four saves in net for her fourth shutout performance of the season, as Maine improves to 8-0-4 and 3-0-1 in America East play. Constantine made three saves in the loss for NJIT, who falls to 5-4-5 and 1-2-1 in the conference. The Black Bears are back on the road on Thursday night when they travel to UMass-Lowell for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
