The Binghamton Bearcats rallied from a 2-0 first half deficit on Sunday afternoon, coming back to earn a 2-2 tie with the Maine Black Bears at Bearcat Sports Complex in Vestal, New York in America East women’s soccer action.
A Binghamton win would of given the Bearcats the regular season America East title and lock up the #1 seed in the conference playoffs, and a Maine win would of given the Black Bears the inside track to that title and top seed. The visitors struck twice in the first 18:08. A shot from the right side of the box by Emma Schneider was stopped by netminder Kaitlyn Williams, but Lara Kirkby was there to slam in the rebound in the 3rd minute. Almost 15 minutes later, Abby Kraemer was taken down on a slide tackle in the box to earn a penalty shot and would convert to make it 2-0 Maine. Olivia McKnight in the 35th minute after a Binghamton corner kick would beat Black Bears goalie Kira Kutzinski with a nice shot from the 18 to cut it to 2-1, which is where it stood at the halftime break. The Bearcats (5-4-6, 4-0-3 America East) were able to earn the tie when Paige Luke scored 14 minutes into the second half of an assist by Grace Vittoria.
Kutzinski and Williams both made three saves in net for their teams. The regular season title and #1 seed comes down to the final game for Maine and Binghamton. The Black Bears host UNH on Thursday night at 6 p.m. at Mahaney Diamond, while the Bearcats are at NJIT also on Thursday at 7 p.m. A win by BU or a Maine loss would give Binghamton that top seed, while a Maine win and a Bearcats loss or tie would allow the Black Bears to take first place.
