The Albany Great Danes put up nearly 500 yards of total offense on Saturday afternoon, and would continue their hot play of late with a 37-21 Coastal Athletic Association football win over the Maine Black Bears at Alfond Stadium in Orono.
Maine (2-7, 1-5 CAA) got off to a good start, taking the opening kickoff and going 69 yards capped off by a Derek Robertson to Jamie Lamson 8-yard touchdown connection. Albany tied it up later in the quarter on a 22-yard TD pass from Reese Poffenbarger to Brevin Easton. John Opalko put the Great Danes ahead for good late in the period with a 22-yard field goal. There was a big turning point to begin the second, as the Black Bears had a good drive going inside UAlbany territory at the 25. Robertson on a second down play was rushed and tried to scramble, but was hit by Brian Abraham and fumbled which become a 68-yard scoop and score for the visitors taken into the endzone by Abraham. Robertson bounced back and helped to engineer the next score for Maine after the turnover, as he hit Michael Monios five times on the march down the field with the final time going for a 4-yard touchdown pass to Monios to cut the deficit to 17-14. The Great Danes also responded in a big way when Poffenbarger found Easton behind the Black Bears defense for a 53-yard TD on the very next possession. They would put it away in the third quarter on touchdown runs of 11 and 12 yards by Faysal Eden to blow it open at 37-14. Albany has now won five of their last six games, improving to 6-3 and 4-1 in conference play.
