Travis Treloar had a game winning second period goal on Saturday night, in leading the #5 Quinnipiac Bobcats to a 4-1 non-conference men’s hockey win over the Maine Black Bears at M & T Bank Arena in Hamden, Connecticut. Quinnipiac salvaged a split of the weekend series, sending Maine to their first loss of the young season.
Maine (3-1) scored first to take their only lead of the night. David Breazeale took a pass at the blue line from Felix Trudeau, and ripped a slapshot just under the crossbar past Quinnipiac goaltender Vinny Duplessis at 12:47 of the first period. It took the Bobcats just 1:10 to equalize, as CJ McGee tallied to make it 1-1. The game winner by Treloar came unassisted 3:53 into the second, and QU extended it to 3-1 on a goal from Mason Marcellus at 18:53 of that middle period. The Black Bears had several powerplay opportunities to get back into the game, including a five minute major that was called on Andon Cerbone for contact to the head with 6:44 left to play. Maine couldn’t convert even with Victor Ostman pulled late for an extra attacker, and Sam Lipkin wrapped up the victory for Quinnipiac with an empty net goal from deep inside his own zone with 1:12 remaining.
Ostman made 26 saves in the loss for Maine. Sully Scholle and Trudeau had one assist each. Duplessis stopped 25 shots in net for Quinnipiac, who breaks a two game losing streak to improve to 4-3. A night after the teams combined to go 0-9 on the powerplay, they would go 0-10 combined on Saturday. Maine opens up Hockey East action on the road next weekend when they head to Merrimack College to battle the Warriors at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
