The Husson Eagles rallied from an early 1-0 deficit on Sunday evening, getting an eventual game winner from Maddie Arsenault in the third quarter to defeat Thomas College 2-1 in the North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Championship game at the Winkin Complex in Bangor.
Thomas College (12-8) controlled play early, and got a goal from Samantha Thebarge that was assisted by Julia Reny 5:24 into the first quarter. The Terriers looked like it had gained more control late in the second as well with that 1-0 lead, before Husson struck to tie it before halftime. After Teagan Blackie kept the ball in the attacking zone, Averi Baker came off the Eagles bench and laid out for a pass from Blackie near the front of the net that she deflected past Thomas goalie Elise Syphers with 2:54 left in the period. That seemed to spark the home team, and they would find that game winner with 4:32 left in the third quarter. A shot by Julia Murch was kicked out by Syphers, but Karlie Ramsdell was able to get to the loose ball and set up Arsenault (Old Town High School) who slammed a hard shot into the cage. Husson buckled down after that, and only allowed Thomas two more shots on goal the rest of the way giving the Eagles their third straight North Atlantic Conference title.
Kimmie Goddard made eight saves in goal in the Husson victory, as they finish their season on a six game win streak and a final record of 9-5. Syphers made seven saves in the loss for Thomas College.
