The University of Maine men’s basketball team hosted Division III in-state opponent the University of Maine Presque-Isle on Wednesday evening in their home opener at Memorial Gymnasium (The Pit) in Orono. Five players scored in double figures as the Black Bears would roll over the Owls 111-59.
After UMPI had a pair of four point leads early on, Maine took over with an 11-0 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. The Black Bears built that advantage to as many as 26 in the first half and led 53-34 at halftime. The hosts really broke it open after the break, outscoring the Owls 26-5 over the first 7:48 to increase the lead to 41. The lead would go to as many as 52 which was the final margin of victory for Maine, as they go to 1-1 after an opening night loss to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte on the road on Monday.
Logan Carey led Maine with 20 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Kellen Tynes added 18 points and four steals. Also in double figures was Milos Nenadic with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Peter Filipovity along with A.J. Lopez had 12 points a piece. The Black Bears shot 61.5% from the floor. Dany Harris led UMPI out of the North Atlantic Conference in the loss with 14 points, and David Ellington contributed 12. The Owls only shot the ball at 30%. Maine is back in action on Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Pit against Merrimack College.
