Max Brosmer accounted for a total of four touchdowns on Saturday afternoon, in leading the University of New Hampshire to a 44-25 win over Maine in Coastal Athletic Association football action at Wildcat Stadium in Durham, New Hampshire. The contest was the 113th all-time meeting between the schools, and the annual battle for the Brice-Cowell Musket which was retained by UNH for a second straight season.
UNH never trailed and drove the field on the first possession of the game. Brosmer connected for a 2-yard touchdown pass to Logan Tomlinson to cap off the 75 yard march. After Maine went three and out their first time with the ball, Brosmer extended the lead to 13-0 with a 56-yard TD pass to Kyle Lepkowski. The Black Bears scored for the first time on the first play of the second quarter, as Derek Robertson found Jamie Lamson on a 4th and goal play from the two-yard line. After Brosmer tossed his third touchdown pass of the first half to Myles Thomason of 10 yards, the visitors drove the field quickly in two minutes helped by a 20-yard run by Tristen Kenan and a 36-yard pass from Robertson to Cooper Heisey. They cut it to 20-14 when Robertson hit Trevin Ewing for a 14-yard TD. In what was a turning point of the football game, Maine surprised UNH with an onside kick after the score and kicker Cody Williams recovered it. After an 18-yard pass from Robertson to Rohan Jones to the Wildcats 38, Robertson would be rushed and sacked for a loss of 27 yards and also fumbled that was recovered by the defense. It took the hosts two plays to score again, as Brosmer found the endzone on a 10-yard run. Robertson was intercepted on the next possession deep in his own territory, and Isaac Seide would make it 34-14 on a 1-yard TD run as they led 34-17 at halftime. UNH wrapped up the victory on an 89-yard punt return by Thomason late in the third quarter. Robertson did toss his third touchdown of the afternoon with the result already decided with a 12-yard pass to Heisey with 3:54 left to play. The Black Bears end the season on a four game losing streak, finishing 2-9 and 1-7 in conference play.
Robertson ended the final game of his career by going 32-51 passing for 315 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Keenan was the leading rusher for Maine in the defeat with 11 carries for 48 yards. Lamson had the most catches with eight of them for 50 yards and a touchdown, while Ewing had the most yards with seven receptions for 79 yards and a score. Kahzir “Buggs” Brown led the defense with seven total tackles. Izaiah Henderson had five tackles (three for a loss) with two sacks. Brosmer went 16-26 passing with three touchdowns in the UNH win, also adding in 18 rushing yards on seven attempts with a touchdown. Tomlinson had eight catches for 121 yards and a score, while Thomason had 55 yards rushing, 11 yards receiving with a TD, and the 89-yard punt return score in the third quarter. The Wildcats, who were picked second in the conference in the preseason poll, also end a disappointing season finishing with a record of 6-5 and 4-4 in the CAA.
