The Columbia Lions outscored the Maine Black Bears 41-26 in the second half on Saturday afternoon, pulling away for a 75-56 men’s basketball win at Levien Gym in New York.
Maine (4-4) held three first half leads, and for the final time on the afternoon on a Kellen Tynes fastbreak layup with 8:05 left at 24-23. Columbia, out of the Ivy League, responded with a 9-0 run to take a 32-24 advantage and led 34-30 at the break. The Lions coming out of halftime would outscore the Black Bears 12-3 in the first 3:21 of the second half to extend it to 46-33. Maine would only get as close as 10 after that, and the lead would grow to as many as 22.
Peter Filipovity, who had a career-high 23 points in leading Maine to win at South Florida on Wednesday night, had 10 points and nine rebounds. Tynes also got into double figures with 10 points, four rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Kristians Feierbergs added nine points, while Jaden Clayton had eight, and Ja’Shone Wright-McLeish along with Logan Carey contributed seven points a piece. The Black Bears shot just 4-21 (19%) from the three-point arc. Zine Eddine Bedri led Columbia with 14 points, while Geronimo Rubio De La Rosa had 12 and Josh Udunowo had 10. The Lions are now 5-2 on the season. Maine finishes their six game road trip on Wednesday night when they head to Massachusetts to take on Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
