In Lincoln at the Lynx Den on Saturday, the Mattanawcook Academy boys varsity basketball team moved to a perfect 3-0 start with a 48-38 victory over the Penquis Valley Patriots (1-2).
The Lynx got off to a slow start but led by a 9-5 score after one quarter. They were able to build the lead to 26-17 at halftime. The second half featured back and forth action with MA leading by 11 points after three quarters. The Lynx were able to hold off a scrappy Patriot squad and emerge with the 10 point victory.
Again, the Lynx were fueled offensively by the hot perimeter shooting of sophomore forward Andrew Oliver who scorched the nets with 21 points. Freshman guard Kooper McCarthy added eight and provided a defensive spark. James Trott also added seven points and four rebounds. Senior Joe Vicaire (six points) was huge in the fourth quarter with back to back dagger three point shots to stave off a Penquis surge. The Patriots were led by Brenden Hobbs who had 14 points, and Kooper Badger who added 10.
The Lynx are back at it next Thursday December 21st at Mattanawcook Academy vs Class C power George Stevens Academy. JV/V start times are 5/6:30 pm.
In the JV contest, MA also moved to 3-0 with a solid 55-28 victory over Penquis Valley. 11 Lynx joined the scoring column in a well balanced attack. A freshmen group of True Weatherbee (10 points), Ryder Osnoe (nine points), Cooper Moore and Liam Walsh (both seven points), and Logan Martinez (five points) paced the attack.
