DEXTER- All five starters got into the scoring column for the Dexter Tigers on Friday evening, en route to a 34-24 Class C boys basketball win over Penobscot Valley (PVHS) at Ed Guiski Gymnasium.
PVHS (1-4) scored the first basket of the game, but Dexter led a majority of the contest and for good 8-5 when Ethan Doherty knocked down a first quarter three-pointer. It was 16-12 Tigers at the half. The Howlers got within 18-16 in the third on a bucket by Kaden Loring, but the hosts would put it away with a run of 12-3 that stretched into the fourth quarter capped off by a Will Spratt three-pointer that made it 30-19 with 3:15 left to play.
Doherty and Spratt led Dexter (3-1) in the win with nine points each. They both had eight rebounds, while Doherty had three blocks and Spratt had two steals. Bryce Cooper added seven points, Kellen Peavey had five, and Zak Adams contributed four points. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 28-17 and shot 1-2 from the foul line. Caleb Moon led PVHS in the loss with eight points. Colin Dunn had five, Loring and Colin Harding had four points each, while Ryan Dawson chipped in three points. The Howlers went 7-12 from the line. Both teams are back in action on Thursday, as Dexter plays at Mattanawcook Academy and PVHS plays on the road at Stearns.
