At Millinocket Thursday, the Penobscot Valley boys basketball team had four players score nine or more points in a 44-33 victory over Stearns.
The Minutemen used defense and transition offense to take an early 10-8 lead in the first, led by eight points from Caden Raymond. In the second quarter the Howlers defense tightened up, holding their opponent to six points while netting eleven going into halftime with a 19-16 lead. Kaden Loring paced PVHS with nine of those 11 points.
In the third quarter, both teams struggled to find their rhythm with Penobscot Valley going into the final frame ahead 25-22. Seniors Colin Harding and Colin Dunn shouldered most of the scoring load in the fourth, notching seven and six points respectively. The Howlers did a good job of getting to the line and converting, knocking down 22 free throws on the night.
PVHS snapped a four game losing streak and improved to 2-4. Harding and Caleb Moon finished with 10 points a piece, while Dunn and Loring scored nine each. Other scorers included Chase Osgood (4) and Ryan Dawson (2). The Howlers will wrap up their fourth straight road game when they travel to Penquis next Thursday.
Stearns slipped to 2-5 and will host Southern Aroostook on Tuesday. Raymond led all scorers with 15 points, while fellow senior Caleb Shearer had eight.
