In Howland Saturday afternoon, senior forward Kaden Loring scored a career-high 23 points as Penobscot Valley boys basketball defeated Woodland 63-51.
Both teams came out in the first quarter aggressively on the offensive end, as the score was tied 18-18 after eight minutes. The work by Loring on the offensive glass not only led to second chance opportunities, but it also got him to the free-throw line where he knocked down five of six. Colin Harding had six points in the quarter, including a three pointer. Brogan Brown hit a pair of triples in the frame to lead Woodland.
The second quarter was all Howlers, as they held the Dragons scoreless while putting up 12 points leading to a 30-18 halftime advantage. This time they were paced by both Loring and Colin Dunn, who each had six points and contributed all of the points.
Woodland turned up the pressure after the half, outscoring PVHS 17-13 and cutting the deficit to eight. Freshman standout Evan Monk connected on a pair of threes and four free throws to lead the way with ten points, and Evan McArthur netted five. The fourth quarter saw the Howlers get scoring contributions from all five starters as they closed out the game.
In addition to the 23 points from Loring, the Howlers were paced by 14 from Harding and 13 from Dunn. Sophomores Ryan Dawson and Chase Osgood finished with eight and three points respectively. Penobscot Valley improved to 3-5 and will host PCHS on Monday.
The Dragons were paced by 18 points from Monk, while other scorers included McArthur (nine), Brown (eight), Sheayn Ferreira (seven), Josh Kinney (six), Connor Crowman (two), and Garrett Clark (one). Woodland drops to 1-7 and will host Calais on Thursday.
