The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team hosted #14 Northeastern on Friday night and Saturday evening in Hockey East action at the Alfond Arena in Orono. The Black Bears were able to pick up a win and a tie against a Huskies team that has won the last six conference titles.
On Friday night- The teams battled through a scoreless regulation, before an overtime game winner 1:11 into the extra session by Ida Kuoppala gave Maine a 1-0 win. Mikayla Boarder had an assist on the only goal of the night, and Jorden Mattison stopped all 21 shots in net for the shutout. The Black Bears went 0-2 on the powerplay. Gwyneth Phillips had 30 saves in the loss for Northeastern. The Huskies would go 0-4 on the powerplay.
On Saturday evening- Avery Anderson scored for Northeastern and Sam Morrison tallied for Maine in the first period, and that was all the scoring throughout the remainder of regulation and a five minute overtime as the game officially ended in a 1-1 tie. The Huskies won a shootout 1-0, as they got a goal in the second round by Allie Lalonde to take the extra conference point. Lily Fetch and Kennedy Little had an assist each on the goal by Morrison for the Black Bears, and Mattison made 23 saves. Maine went 0-1 on the powerplay as their record goes to 11-11-1 overall and 7-8-1 in Hockey East. Lily Shannon had the lone assist for Northeastern. Phillips had 31 stops. The Huskies also went 0-1 on the powerplay and are now 13-9-1, 8-7-1 in conference play. Maine returns to action on Friday and Saturday with road trips to UConn and Merrimack. The game Friday is at 2 p.m., and the faceoff Saturday is at 4.
