In Howland on Thursday, senior Colin Dunn led all scorers with 15 points as the Penobscot Valley Howlers (PVHS) boys basketball team finished off a season sweep against the Stearns Minutemen with a 58-41 win.
The Howlers got off to a red hot start in the first quarter, scoring 16 points including three 3-pointers (two by sophomore Ryan Dawson and one by senior Caleb Moon) and built a 16-7 lead. Stearns outplayed and outscored PVHS in the second (10-9), led by six points from Caden Raymond.
Penobscot Valley was able to stretch their lead to 10 in the third, as Stearns started to increase the pressure on defense. Timely baskets and free throws allowed the Howlers to extend the lead to 20, improving to 5-6 on the season.
In addition to the 15 points from Dunn, he also dished out a team-high five assists. The scoring balance was excellent on this night for the Howlers, with Harding netting 13, and three others (Kaden Loring, Caleb Moon, and Ryan Dawson) all scoring nine points each. Chase Osgood also got on the board with three points of his own. PVHS will host Calais on Saturday.
Stearns, on the second night of a back-to-back, saw their three-game winning streak snapped. They were led in the scoring column by Raymond (14 points), Caleb Shearer (10), Michael Robinson (9), Luca Pelkey (5), and Tyler Morris (3). The Minutemen drop to 5-8 on the year, currently sitting in seventh place in Class D North, and will host Lee Academy on Wednesday of next week.
