DEXTER- Mazie Peach and Cally Gudroe combined to score 25 points on Monday night, leading the Dexter Tigers to a 36-31 win over Mattanawcook Academy in a matchup of two Class C North girls basketball contenders at Ed Guiski Gymnasium.
Dexter, who fell by a point to Mattanawcook for their only loss so far on December 27 in Lincoln on a buzzer beating layup by Addison Cyr, would never trail in this one. The Tigers went on a 7-2 first quarter run for a 9-4 lead after the opening eight minutes. Peach had five blocked shots in the period. Peach would step up her offensive game by putting in six points in the second, and it was 18-14 Dexter at the half. They outscored the Lynx 9-3 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 27-17. After trailing by as many as 11 early in the fourth, Mattanawcook made a run late to get within one possession. Cyr knocked down a three-pointer with 1:43 to play to cut the deficit to 33-31. A steal by Corson to help fuel two defensive stops along with one free throw each by Desiree Adams, Gudroe, and Corson iced it for the Tigers to improve to 10-1 on the season.
Peach led the way in the Dexter win with a double double finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and eight blocked shots. Gudroe had 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Hannah Dean chipped in five points and eight rebounds, while both Adams and Corson contributed three points a piece. The Tigers won the rebounding battle 27-17, and shot 12-21 from the free throw line. Julian Cloukey had three points, Kaitlyn Thornton two, and Megan House had a free throw for one point. The Lynx shot 5-6 at the line and fell to 11-2.
