ORONO- James Schureman had a goal and assisted on two others on Friday night, as the Bangor Rams topped the Brewer Witches 4-1 at the Alfond Arena in a high school boys hockey matchup. The contest was part of the annual Fill the Alfond event played between the two rival schools.
Schureman got his lone goal in the first period and gave Bangor a lead they would never relinquish. His shot from the high slot would elude Brewer goaltender Ethan Hanscom five-hole at 4:19 to make it 1-0. Late in the stanza with 1:25 to go, the Witches had a good chance to tie it but a rebound chance from Baylon Cram was turned away by freshman netminder Cole Fernald. Michael Moscone netted the eventual game winner 1:10 into the second period that extended the Rams advantage to 2-0, on a beautiful tic tac toe passing play in the low slot. Brewer tried to turn up the pressure and was rewarded with the very first powerplay of the night just 1:46 after the Moscone tally, but couldn’t convert. Grady Vanidestine had another good look a few minutes later, but it was stopped with a glove save from Fernald right in front of the net. Miles Randall made it 3-0 Bangor at 1:43 of the third off a nice feed from behind the goal by Marc-Andre Perron. Grant Cram finally got the Witches on the board on a rebound at 8:24, but the Rams thwarted any comeback ideas when Chase Caron tallied to end the scoring at 10:15 after he made a nice move around Cam Dostie to get in clean on Hanscom.
Along with the one goal and two assists by Schureman, Bangor got two assists from Perron, and an assist a piece from Philip Moscone and Seamus Hagerty. Fernald made 19 saves, as the top seeded Rams out of Class A improve to 9-2 on the season bouncing back after their seven game win streak was ended by John Bapst 2-1 on Wednesday. Dominic Stecher and James Armenia assisted on the Cram goal for Brewer in the loss. Hanscom made 30 saves. The Witches from Class B North have their four game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) snapped falling to 4-6-1. Both teams play again on Wednesday at home, as Bangor takes on St. Dom’s and Brewer faces Gardiner/Waterville/Winslow co-op. The girls hockey Fill the Alfond game was postponed on Friday, but will be played on Saturday at 5 p.m. between the Penobscot Pioneers (Bangor Area co-op) and the Black Tigers (Winslow Area co-op).
