The Brewer/Lawrence High School boys ice hockey team got a natural hat trick from senior Nick Tozier, and celebrated their senior night on Wednesday by shutting out Gardiner co-op (Gardiner, Waterville, Winslow) 8-0 at the Penobscot Ice Arena in Brewer.
Brewer controlled the first period with the puck in the Gardiner zone for most of it, but Tigers goalie Noah Robertson kept the Witches off the board in the first 15 minutes. Baylon Cram scored what turned out to be the game winner 40 seconds into the second on a rebound. Senior Hunter Merrithew extended the lead on a wristshot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle at 5:51. Brewer also got a powerplay tally in that second stanza from Grant Cram, and an even strength goal by Josh Hitchings to make it 4-0. Senior Cam Dostie (Lawrence) scored in the third period, and Tozier finished his big night with three in a row for the natural hat trick including one while shorthanded.
Senior Ethan Hanscom and junior Calvin Grass combined for the shutout in net for Brewer who improves to 5-6-1. Tozier with his hat trick and Grant Cram (one goal, two assists) were the leading point scorers with three each. Seniors Dominic Stecher and Grady Vanidestine also added two assists a piece. Brewer returns to action on Saturday when they travel to face Class A co-op Fryeburg/Lake Region/Oxford Hills, while Gardiner/Waterville/Winslow who is now 0-11 on the season will visit Sawyer Arena in Bangor to take on Hampden on Tuesday.
