At Howland Wednesday night, Sereyko Gym was sold out for a highly anticipated Class C North girls battle between Penobscot Valley (PVHS) and Mattanawcook Academy. Both teams entered the last regular season game with a 15-2 record.
The contest lived up to the hype with PVHS never trailing, but also never leading by more than three possessions. The Howlers would hold on secure the 34-29 win. PVHS held a 15-11 lead at the half, but Mattanawcook closed the gap quickly to start the third quarter and tied the game at 17-17. At that point, Howlers senior Ashlyn St. Cyr hit a 3-point shot that gave the hosts the lead for good.
The story of the night was the dominance of PVHS junior Ellie Austin who had 23 points, eight rebounds, and six steals for her team. She scored in every way- inside, midrange, and at the 3-point line. Mia Neal and Lila Cummings anchored the Howlers defense holding the impressive interior game of Addison Cyr and Kaitlyn Thornton for Mattanawcook to just nine and six points respectively. Cyr and Thornton were the leading scorers for the Lady Lynx.
PVHS finishes their season with a 16-2 record giving them third place in Class C North. Mattanawcook will be the 4th place team with a 15-3 record.
