BANGOR- The Ellsworth Eagles used a 31-3 first half run on Saturday morning, and would pull away from the Winslow Black Raiders 62-39 in a Maine Principals’ Association Class B boys quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center.
With the score tied 4-4 early on, top seeded Ellsworth scored the final nine points of the first quarter to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Chance Mercier put in 10 points in the second, and the Eagles outscored Winslow 22-3 to build a 28 point halftime lead in cruising to a spot in a Wednesday morning semifinal.
Mercier led Ellsworth in the win with 16 points, six rebounds, five steals, and four assists. The Eagles had 13 players get into the scoring column. Miles Palmer and Kyle Kenny added eight points a piece, and Josiah James-Chin along with Connor MacDonald contributed six points each. Braden Rodrigue led all scorers with 20 points for #9 seed Winslow. Brody Willette chipped in eight points, and Matthew Reynolds had six. The Black Raiders end their season with a record of 13-7. Ellsworth (16-3) takes on defending state champion Orono in the semifinals on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.. That game is a rematch of the regional final won by the Red Riots last season.
