BANGOR- Mia Mills had a game-high 15 points, and Jonesport-Beals had seven different players score on Monday afternoon in holding off Schenck 48-43 in a Maine Principals’ Association Class D girls quarterfinal game played at the Cross Insurance Center.
Jonesport-Beals never trailed, and got out to a 16-9 lead after one quarter behind five points from Riley Balicki. The Lady Royals built that advantage to 27-16 at the half paced by six points each from Mills, Breanna Alley, and Rachel Crowley over the first 16 minutes.
After Schenck cut it to five on two free throws by Abigaile Hutchins with 7:10 left to play in the fourth quarter, Mills pushed it back to eight for Jonesport-Beals with a three-pointer less than a minute later. The Wolverines weren’t done though, as a three-pointer by Addyson Freeman and another two point bucket by Freeman and one by Lidia Matarazzo after some Royals backcourt turnovers sliced it to 42-40 with 1:20 remaining. Mills then converted a layup, but missed the free throw in an attempt to make it a three-point play. Matarazzo made 1-2 free throws to make it 44-41, before a Jonesport-Beals turnover on the other end was turned into another basket by Matarazzo with 35 seconds showing on the clock making it a one point game. Mills was a perfect 2-2 at the line 12 seconds later, and a tying three-pointer by Freeman was no good. The Lady Royals iced the victory with two free throws by Alley.
Mills added six rebounds in the win for #4 Jonesport-Beals. Crowley had a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Alley finished with eight points, while Aspen Alley contributed six points. Balicki chipped in five points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Royals outrebounded the Wolverines 42-21. Schenck was led by Mallory Brown with 10 points and five rebounds. Matarazzo had eight points and five steals. Freeman had seven points, while Hutchins and Harlee Sprague recorded six points a piece. The #5 seed ends their season with a record of 10-9. Jonesport-Beals (12-7) will play in the semifinals on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. against either Southern Aroostook or Deer Isle-Stonington.
