BANGOR— The Katahdin Cougars rallied back from a 13-0 deficit and defeated Easton 55-51 in a Class D MPA boys quarterfinal game played Monday Morning at the Cross Insurance Center.
Easton jumped out to their quick start behind Owen Sweeney getting his 1000 career point just over two minutes into the contest.
Katahdin responded with an 8-0 run of their own, sparked by 2 three-pointers from Calvin Richardson. Easton held a 17-12 lead after the first quarter as Chase Flewelling put in 7 point in the first eight minutes. Easton had a 27-26 advantage at the half.
Flewelling and Sweeney combined for all 18 points in the third quarter as they expanded the lead to 45-40. In the fourth with 1:46 remaining, Katahdin held a 52-48 lead when Richardson committed his fourth foul and followed that with a technical foul which was his fifth foul. Sweeney made three out of four from the line. Those would be the final points of the contest for the Bears. Bryten Hartsgrove made three foul shots down the stretch to secure the win for the Cougars.
Flewelling scored a game-high 24 points for the Bears. He also had seven rebounds and two assists. Sweeney contributed 17 points, six assists, four steals, and three rebounds. Easton finishes their season with a record of 14-5.
Connor Edwards led the Cougars with 15 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Richardson had 12 points, while Sam Boone had 10 points and five rebounds. Katahdin (17-2) will play Schenck in a semifinal game on Thursday night at 8:30 PM.
