BANGOR- Lily Oliver scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the second half on Monday night, leading the Fort Kent girls basketball team to a 42-32 Maine Principals’ Association Class C quarterfinal win at the Cross Insurance Center.
Fort Kent (15-4) scored the first eight points of the game, and Bucksport wasn’t able to get on the scoreboard until there was 2:30 left as the Warriors led 10-5 after the opening eight minutes. The Golden Bucks took their first lead with an 8-0 run in the second at 15-12, capped off by a three-pointer by Jetta Shook. FK scored the next five points to jump back in front 17-15 on a three-pointer by Lily Werntgen and a basket by Oliver, before a last second three-pointer just before the buzzer by Sam Cyr made it 18-17 Bucksport at the break.
Oliver took advantage of Bucksport turnovers in the third quarter, in which was a decisive period. After the Bucks had their largest lead at 23-19 on another three-pointer by Shook, Oliver scored 10 points in a row unanswered to make it 29-23 Fort Kent. She had 12 points in the quarter. Four is the closest Bucksport would get after that, and the Warriors would push it to as many as 11 in the fourth in advancing to a Thursday night semifinal.
Oliver added nine steals and five rebounds to her game-high point total in the win for #2 Fort Kent. Julia Cyr and Emlyn Nadeau both chipped in five points a piece. The Warriors had 22 steals as a team. Shook led Bucksport with 14 points, 11 rebounds, five steals, two assists, and two blocked shots. Cyr also contributed six points. The Bucks end their season as the #10 seed with a record of 12-8. Fort Kent plays PVHS in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
