Bangor – David Tuttle scored 17 points, but none bigger than his two free throws down the stretch to propel the young Hodgdon Hawks past the Machias Bulldogs 64-57 in a Maine Principals’ Association Class C boys quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center on Tuesday afternoon.
The #5 seeded Hawks (16-3), raced out to a 16-13 first quarter lead thanks to the hot hand of Cyran Ciarleglio and his seven points. Bobby Richardson scored eight of his 16 points in the second quarter helping Machias trim the Hodgdon lead to two points at the half. The Hawks expanded their lead at the end of the third quarter to nine points, as Daniel Henderson scored seven points and added four of his eight rebounds during the period. The Bulldogs were able to get within two points twice in the fourth, before Tuttle sank two key free throws with 17 seconds left to secure the win for Hodgdon.
Mickey Fitzsimmons led all scorers with 21 points in the loss for Machias, while Richardson had 16. Hayden Blake added eight points, and both Kaiden Wood and Kaiyden Carter chipped in six points a piece. The Bulldogs end their season at 14-5.
Hodgdon was led by the 17 points from Tuttle, Cyran Ciarleglio had 15 points, Daniel Henderson 13 points, Brody Little and Wyatt Oliver with eight points each, and Logan Sherman with three points. The Hawks scored 21 points above (64) what the Bulldogs had allowed per game this season (43).
Hodgdon moves into the semifinals and will face #1 Calais on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Center.
