Southern Aroostook girls pull away from Jonesport-Beals to advance to sixth straight regional final

BANGOR- Cami Shields scored 17 of her game-high 20 points in the second half on Thursday, leading the two-time defending state champion Southern Aroostook Warriors to a 57-35 win over Jonesport-Beals in a Maine Principals’ Association Class D girls semifinal played at the Cross Insurance Center.

It was a slow start for Southern Aroostook, as #4 Jonesport-Beals had a 6-5 lead after one quarter with all six points coming from Mary McDonald. The Warriors had a slim 12-11 advantage in the second, and that is when they ended the period on a 10-0 run to take a 22-11 lead to the halftime break. They then scored 12 of the first 14 points of the second half (22-2 run overall) to help get some separation and pull away, advancing to their sixth straight regional championship game.

Cami Shields added four steals, three rebounds, and three assists to her game-high point total in the win. Ally Shields scored 12 points in the second quarter and finished with 18 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Mia Mills put in 10 points, and chipped in four rebounds, three steals, and two assists in the loss for Jonesport-Beals. McDonald had nine points, as the Royals end their season with a record of 12-8. #1 Southern Aroostook (19-1) will take on #7 Katahdin in the North Regional Final at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
