BANGOR- Saige Evans scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Old Town Coyotes to a 58-42 win over Ellsworth in a MPA Class B girls basketball Northern Maine Championship game on Friday night at the Cross Insurance Center. It is the first regional championship since 1980 for the Lady Coyotes (Class A), and the first ever Class B regional championship.
Alexis Degrasse got Old Town started with seven points in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 16-10 lead. Evans scored 12 points in the first half, including eight in the second quarter as the Lady Coyotes held a 35-22 halftime advantage.
Evans had nine points in the third quarter, and in the fourth quarter they limited Ellsworth to three late fields to finish off the championship win.
Grace Jaffray scored a team-high 12 points for the Lady Eagles. Ellsworth had an outstanding season as the defending state champion, finishing with a 20-1 record.
Degrasse added 15 points and six assists in the win. Makayla Emerson had nine points and five assists. They had 18 assists as a team. Old Town outrebounded Ellsworth 31-10. The Lady Coyotes (19-2) will play Oceanside (21-0) in the State Championship game on Friday, March 1st at 6 PM in Bangor.
