The Husson University baseball and softball teams both played North Atlantic Conference doubleheaders on Tuesday afternoon against Vermont State University-Lyndon. The baseball team was on the road, while softball would host the Hornets and it would end up being a clean sweep on the day for the Eagles.
Baseball Game 1 at the Skip Pound Complex in Lyndonville, Vermont- Cam Rendell had two hits and four RBI to lead Husson to a 6-1 win. Tanner Evans reached on an error in the second inning that scored an unearned run that made it 1-0, and Rendell added to the lead with a two-run single in the third that ended up being the game winner. Matt Holmes launched a solo homerun to right centerfield in the sixth, and Rendell smacked a two-run shot in the seventh inning. Matt Wallingford (1-2) earned the pitching victory allowing one run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Carlos Rodriguez (0-2) took the loss on the hill for Vermont State University-Lyndon, and Matt Doherty had two hits including an RBI double for their only run of the contest.
Baseball Game 2- Husson rallied from a 5-0 second inning deficit, and completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory. Two-run singles by Doherty and Alberto Bustamante in the first inning and an RBI single in the second by Ryan Alt had Vermont State University-Lyndon up 5-0. The Eagles fought back in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Colin Marshall, and a two-run single by Keegan Cyr to cut it to 5-3. An infield RBI single by Holmes in the fifth sliced to just one, and then in the sixth Akira Warren tied it with a single and Rendell reached on an error that allowed the game winning unearned run to score. Rendell added his fifth RBI of the day with a sacrifice flyout in the eighth inning. Alex Smith (1-1) won in relief of starter Carter Abood going 8.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Jackson Curtis had three hits and Warren had two. Alt and TJ Santaw had two hits each in the loss for the Hornets. Jack Holley (1-2) was tagged with the pitching defeat giving up four runs in 7.0 innings. Vermont State University-Lyndon falls to 2-17 and 1-4 in the North Atlantic Conference.
Softball Game 1 at O’Keefe Field in Bangor- Husson batted around in the second scoring 17 times, and would win by mercy rule in five innings 22-0. Tori Exel and Kenzie Dore led the offense, and in the second inning the two would combine for two doubles, two singles, and a homerun by Dore driving in five runs during the frame. Exel had three hits and five RBI overall, and Dore had three hits and four knocked in. Lyndsee Reed and Lydia Rice had three hits a piece, with Reed finishing with two RBI. Bulla McCabe also had two hits and two RBI, while Jordan Lambert and Olivia McCarty chipped in two RBI each. Jazmin Johnson (1-1) picked up the win in the circle for the Eagles. Vermont State University-Lyndon was held to three hits, and Victoria Valentine (3-6) took the loss allowing 14 earned runs over 3.2 innings.
Softball Game 2- A two-run double by Camryn King and an RBI single by Josie Cornell in the second inning was more than enough, as Husson finished the sweep with another mercy rule win 8-0 in six innings. The Eagles took advantage of a two-run error in the third inning to help double their lead, and Julia Gregoire ended it with a two-run homerun in the sixth. Cornell had three hits, while King and Emily Dunbar had two each. Sierra Yates (2-0) won in the circle pitching in relief of starter Ana Lang who only allowed one hit with a walk and four strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Bailey Quire (2-5) was charged with eight runs (six earned) over 5.2 innings in the loss for Vermont State University-Lyndon. The Hornets drop to 5-12, 1-3 in the North Atlantic Conference.
Husson baseball is now 8-7, 5-1 in the NAC with five straight wins and will return to action on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. with a single non-conference game at Colby College. The Eagles softball team improved to 14-4 and 2-0 in conference and have won nine in a row and will also be in non-conference on Thursday with a doubleheader at Plymouth State University at 4 p.m.
