At the Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach, the Bangor Babes and Old Orchard Beach Bugs both played their first ever games in the Greater Northeast Collegiate Baseball League (GNCBL) with a seven inning doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Babes would begin the 24-game regular season with a sweep over the Beach Bugs.
Landon Williams (Galveston College, Texas) hit a two-run double in the seventh inning of Game 1 to lead Bangor to a 4-3 comeback win, after trailing 3-0 early. Alex Smith (Husson University) pitched 4.0 inning of scoreless relief to pick up the victory on the mound.
Bangor capitalized on a pair of walks and a passed ball to push across a run in the seventh inning of Game 2 to sweep the doubleheader with a 2-1 win. Williams also singled in another run for the Babes. Allen Wheaton (Husson) allowed one run over the first 3.0 innings, before Kyle Poissoit (Hendrix College, Arkansas) earned the victory by following with 3.0 scoreless innings on the hill. Jack Morris (SMCC) came on for Poissoit and retired one batter in the seventh, before Johnny Miles (Hendrix College) ended it and picked up the save by recording the final two outs and stranding two Old Orchard baserunners.
Bangor starts 2-0, and will be in action again on Saturday with a road doubleheader against the Augusta Surgin’ Sturgeon at Morton Field beginning at 3 p.m. Their home opener is Wednesday, June 12 at 6 p.m. at the Winkin Complex in Bangor against the Gorham Lightning. The Old Orchard Beach Bugs (0-2) will play a single game on the road against the Sebago Slammin’ Salmon on Wednesday at 6.
