After an impressive 56-14 season opening win last Saturday over Framingham State where running back Jed Lober rushed for five touchdowns, the Husson football team is back at home in non-conference play again this week against the run-first Springfield College Pride.
Springfield (1-0) is consistently one of the more premier running teams in all of Division III. The Pride, out of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), rushed for 366 yards last Saturday in a season opening 38-32 win over Western New England that included 215 yards and a touchdown from graduate running back Arsen Shtefan. Their quarterback Jacob Silvester only attempted seven passes (2 for 7, 27 yards) in the victory. Since 2019, they have ranked either first or second in rushing ranks in D3, and in 2023 ran for 4,331 yards (6.3 yards per attempt) and 380 per game. Springfield is also a traditional powerhouse appearing in the postseason nine times, including the last three seasons consecutively. They also have a defense that recorded five tackles for a loss, three sacks, and an interception in the win over WNEU.
Husson will look to build off their offensive success from last week with Lober (135 yards rushing) and quarterback Max Clark, who made his first career start passing for 162 yards (10 for 16) with two TDs and an interception. The Eagles defense also had seven tackles for a loss, two sacks, and an interception. Husson and Springfield is set for a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday afternoon at the Winkin Complex in Bangor.
