Maine women’s soccer, field hockey both stay unbeaten in conference play

The University of Maine field hockey and women’s soccer teams both played America East games on Sunday trying to stay unbeaten in conference action, with field hockey at home and soccer on the road.

At the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono- Poppy Lambert had two goals, including the game winner as Maine defeated the University of California-Davis 3-1.

The Black Bears controlled the chances with shots on goal and corner opportunities throughout the match, but it was scoreless until Lambert scored 12:21 into the second quarter on assists from Alexandra Sacker and Saylor Kuefler. Kate Richardson made it 2-0 just 25 seconds later unassisted. Lambert got her second goal on a penalty stroke late in the third quarter, while Ella Franken got the lone tally for the Aggies almost halfway through the fourth to finish the scoring.

Rozarie Mrazova made one save in net in the Maine win. The Black Bears outshot the Aggies 19-4 (11-2 on goal), and had a 10-2 edge in penalty corners. Emma Giesting had eight stops in the first 45 minutes in the loss for UC-Davis, while  Sarah Lopez played the fourth quarter and didn’t face any shots on net. The Aggies fall to 2-8 and 0-4 in America East. Maine improves to 8-4 and 2-0 in the conference and will hit the road to take on UMass-Lowell next Friday at 3 p.m.

At Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, Rhode Island- Jordane Pinette scored her fifth goal of the season that ended up being the game winner in the 60th minute, in helping to lead Maine to a 3-1 America East women’s soccer win over Bryant University.

Black Bears forward Abby Kraemer had the lone goal of the first half in the 10th minute. Myla Schneider sent a kick from just inside midfield and into the box, that Kraemer headed into the net just inside the far post to the left of Bulldogs goalie Shannon Mejia. Maine extended their lead to 2-0 in the second half on the game winner by Pinette unassisted, who scooped up a rebound off a Kraemer shot that was stopped. Bryant responded just 2:42 later when Kelsie Wandyes tallied on a helper from Makayla Griffin. The guests capped the road win in the 69th minute on a goal from Anna Phillips off a corner taken by Tegan Morrison who got the assist.

Jessica Kasacek made six saves in net in the Maine win. The Black Bears outshot the Bulldogs 28-11 (14-7 on net) and also had an 8-4 edge in corner opportunities. Mejia had 11 stops in the loss for Bryant, as they fall to 4-5-3 and 2-1-0 in America East. The victory is the sixth consecutive for Maine, improving to 8-1-2 and 4-0 in conference play. The Bears will be back in action next Sunday on the road at UMBC at 12 p.m.
