Alissia De Vries scored a game winning second quarter goal on Friday afternoon, leading the University of Massachusetts-Lowell to a 5-1 America East win over Maine in field hockey action at Wicked Blue Field in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Aurise Tattrie got UMass-Lowell (7-5, 2-1 America East) on the board first in a scoreless game 6:27 into the second quarter. De Vries tallied her game winner 2:04 later off an assist from Lisa Hagel and Florine Gerrits on a corner opportunity to make it 2-0 Riverhawks. Maine got their lone goal of the afternoon to cut the deficit in half just about two minutes after the De Vries marker, when Zoe Furber found the net off a penalty corner taken by Eloise Penty. Poppy Lambert picked up an assist. It was all UML in the second half as Alice Van Hemelen notched a third quarter goal 10:49 into the period, and Christina Wagner along with Madison Leeper scored 1:46 part in the fourth to secure their third straight win.
Rozarie Mrazova made six saves on 11 shots in net for Maine in the loss. The Black Bears fall for the first time in conference play, dropping to 8-5 overall and 2-1 in America East. Maxine Van Havere also added an assist in the victory for UMass-Lowell. The Riverhawks split their goalie time as Christina Calandra stopped two of three shots in the first half, and Marie Oliemans saved both shots she faced over the final 30 minutes. The Black Bears are back in non-conference play on Sunday as they host Holy Cross in Orono at 12 p.m.
