November 27, 2024

The Penobscot Pioneers girls ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 decision on Wednesday afternoon at the Penobscot Ice Arena in Brewer with Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland/Monmouth co-op. The Pios have started their regular season with a pair of ties.

Cayleigh Coleman scored the first goal of the day at 4:43 of the opening period for Penobscot off an assist from Paige Oakes to make it 1-0 Pios. Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland/Monmouth tied it on a tally by Leksi Langevin at 3:17 of the second assisted by Avery Cologna, before Oakes found the back of the net at 10:13 of the stanza unassisted to take back the lead for the Pioneers heading into the third period. Adalyn Martin found the equalizer for the guests at 5:03 of the third, with Langevin also picking up her second point of the afternoon with an assist. Neither team would score in the remainder of the period or in the extra session as they settled for the 2-2 draw. Mariah Coon played in net for the 0-0-2 Pioneers, while freshman Paige Fecteau was in the cage for the 1-0-1 Red Hornets.

The Pioneers opened their season with a 6-6 home tie on Saturday afternoon against Biddeford/Thornton/Wells/Sanford co-op, helped by a hat trick by Oakes and two goals from Delaney Carr. The Penobscot team is made up of girls from local area high schools including Brewer, Bangor, Hampden, Hermon, John Bapst, Old Town, and Orono. The Pios are in their third year of varsity ice hockey, losing in the North Regional Final in each of the first two seasons to Winslow/Gardiner/Cony/Lawrence/Mt. Blue and then Yarmouth/Freeport this past February. Penobscot plays again next Wednesday evening, December 4 at 6:10 p.m. when they host the Winslow/Gardiner co-op.

Starting with this 2024-25 season and every year going forward, the Penobscot Pioneers are dedicating every home hockey game to the memory of George Bishop. Bishop, 65, along with his wife Linda purchased the Penobscot Ice Arena in 2013. George unexpectedly passed away at the PIA doing what he loved on March 3, 2024.
