Husson men’s and women’s basketball sweeps NAC doubleheader over UMF

BANGOR- The Husson men’s and women’s basketball teams celebrated Senior Day on Saturday afternoon by sweeping past the University of Maine-Farmington in North Atlantic Conference action at Newman Gymnasium.

In the women’s game- Husson used a balanced scoring attack and outscored UMaine-Farmington 17-6 in the second quarter to take the lead for good in a 61-49 win.

After trailing 14-12 after one quarter, a layup by Jordyn Lengle and a three-pointer by Hannah Richards to start the second pushed Husson on top to stay 17-14. The Eagles led by nine at halftime, and UMF never got closer than seven the rest of the way as the advantage went to as many as 16 in the second half.

Lengle led the way in the Husson win with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Richards finished with 12 points, while Makaelyn Porter added 10 points. Trinity Montigny contributed eight points and 11 rebounds, Lauren Cook had seven points, and Saige Evans put in five points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Jaydn Pingree led UMF in the loss with 16 points and six rebounds, Jessica Dow had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Sarah Poli also had 10 points and grabbed 12 boards. The Beavers fall to 8-10 and 5-4 in the NAC. The Eagles are now 7-1 in their last eight games to improve to 10-10 overall, and with eight straight conference wins they move to 8-1 in league play. Husson will travel to the University of Maine-Fort Kent for a non-conference matchup next Friday.

In the men’s game- Tope Alao poured in a game-high 21 points as Husson completed the sweep with an impressive 85-60 thumping of UMF.

The Eagles never trailed scoring the first eight points on a jumper by Scott Lewis, a pair of layups by Jeremy Moronta, and a layup by Connor Heald. After trailing by as many as 13 early on, the Beavers got back within six on a three-pointer by Simon Chadbourne with 5:32 left in the first half. Husson though would stretch it back out to their biggest lead of the opening 20 minutes at 14 and led by 13 at the break. UMaine-Farmington never got closer than 11 the rest of the way, and the 25 point victory was the largest lead of the afternoon for the hosts.

Alao added five rebounds to his game-high point total in the Husson win. Heald and Riles Neff both put in 17 points, while Moronta finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Lewis also contributed with eight points and 11 rebounds. Zach McLaughlin led UMF in the loss with 14 points, Chadbourne and Dylan Griffin had 12 points a piece, while Jason Reynolds registered 10 points and seven rebounds. The Beavers drop to 10-9 and 7-2 in the NAC. The Eagles are now in first place in the East Division improving to 13-7 overall and 8-1 in the conference. Husson is on the road at the University of Maine-Fort Kent next Friday night in a non-conference matchup.
