At Memorial Gymnasium on Skip Chappelle Court in Orono on Thursday night, the Albany Great Danes went on a 10-0 second quarter run to take the lead for good in a 56-40 America East women’s basketball win over Maine. The Black Bears loss snaps a 19 game home winning streak vs conference opponents.
Despite seven turnovers in the first quarter, Maine was able to hold a 12-10 advantage the opening 10 minutes helped by five points from Caroline Dotsey. Albany then took the lead for good with their 10-0 run over the first five minutes of the second period. Delanie Hill nailed a pair of three-pointers during that spurt, and the Great Danes led 26-21 at the break. The Black Bears got within three early in the third quarter, but that is as close as they’d get the rest of the way in dropping their fourth straight America East game. The last time Maine did that was in the 2012-2013 season (lost their first six).
Dotsey led Maine in the loss with a team-high 14 points, while also adding six rebounds. Caroline Borneman contributed seven points and eight rebounds, Olivia Rockwood put in six points and grabbed five rebounds, while Sera Hodgson recorded five points. The Black Bears shot 31.1% from the floor (14-45), that also included 5-28 from three-point range (17.9%). They also turned the ball over a total of 20 times, leading to 19 points for the guests. Jessica Tomasetti had a game-high 17 points and had 12 rebounds for first place Albany. Kaci Donovan had nine points, while Hill and Lilly Phillips put in seven points a piece. The Great Danes improve to 21-5 and 11-2 in America East. Maine slips to 12-14 and 7-6 in conference play and will host Binghamton on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
