UMBC finished off a three game America East softball sweep over Maine on Saturday afternoon, winning both ends of a doubleheader 4-2 (in eight innings) and 6-1 at Pierre & Catherine Labat Softball Complex in Orono.
Game one- Gabby Papushka and Francesa Guerrera both had RBI hits for the Black Bears, but a pinch hit two-run homerun by Jolie Torrens in the eighth gave the Retrievers the extra innings win. Madison Simmerman (3-8) took the loss in the circle for Maine in the complete game effort allowing four runs on nine hits.
Game two- Jerzie Nutile had two hits and two runs scored, and Haley Luginbill hit a three-run homer as UMBC completed the sweep. Maine was held without a hit until the sixth inning when Bailey Snowberger put them on the board for the only time with an RBI single. Ava Zettlemoyer (0-1) took the pitching loss for the Black Bears giving up three runs on two hits in 4.0 innings. Kyla Matter (8-8) shut things down for the hosts in the circle firing a complete game with one run allowed on one hit with three walks and 11 strikeouts to pick up the victory. The Retrievers improve to 13-21 and 7-2 in America East.
Maine has now lost 11 games in a row, falling to 6-26 and 0-9 in the conference. The Black Bears will play a non-conference doubleheader at Stonehill College on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m.
