Matt Holmes (Bangor) had three hits and four RBI, and Alex Smith fired 6.1 innings of scoreless relief on Monday evening as Husson University beat Bowdoin College 6-1 in non-conference baseball action in Brunswick.
Kevin Murray got the Polar Bears off to a 1-0 lead with a two-out solo homerun off Wyatt Stevens (Bangor) in the bottom of the first inning. The Bowdoin offense would be silenced after that, and Husson jumped ahead for good with three runs in the third. Ryan Bousquet scored on a passed ball, and Holmes hit a two-run single down the rightfield line to make it 3-1. Holmes added RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings, and the Eagles picked up their final run on a wild pitch in that seventh frame in sending Bowdoin to just their second loss in the last nine games.
Husson ended up with four hits in the victory with Holmes picking up three of them. Stevens went 2.2 innings with Smith (1-0) going the rest of the way for the win on the hill (6.1 innings), allowing no runs on three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Chris Dirks and Cal Thompson each had two hits for Bowdoin, while Rudy Gately (0-1) suffered the pitching defeat giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits in 3.0 innings. The Polar Bears, who received votes in the top 25 Division III Poll this past week, drop to 18-4 on the season. The Eagles are now 13-9 and have won five games in a row. Husson is scheduled to host North Atlantic Conference doubleheaders against both Vermont State University Lyndon and SUNY Cobleskill this coming Saturday and Sunday.
