Maine baseball rolls over Division III UMaine-Farmington

The University of Maine baseball team rolled to a 17-1 win by mercy rule in seven innings on Wednesday evening over Division III opponent the University of Maine-Farmington at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.

Aidan Bardi, Drew Reynolds, and Payton Whitehead all drove in three runs. Whitehead hit a two-run homerun in the third inning, his fifth of the season. Eight different Black Bears recorded at least one hit. Freshman and former Mr. Maine Baseball Caleb Vacchiano (Sacopee Valley) started his second career game and picked up his first hit and his first RBI. He also scored twice, drew a walk, and stole a base. Evan Menzel, Myles Sargent, and Damon Gaither also scored three runs each. Quinn Murphy had three hits and drove in two, while Gaither also had two RBI. Peirce Friedman (1-0) picked up the win on the mound by firing 2.0 innings and striking out three. Tyler Rosa had the lone RBI for UMaine-Farmington (5-15).

Maine is now 14-20 overall and is on a six game win streak. The Black Bears will take their 8-4 America East record into a three game conference home series with UMBC this weekend. First pitch on Friday is 3 p.m., while the contests on Saturday and Sunday begin at 1 p.m. and 12 p.m. respectively.
