Thomas College spoils the Husson Senior Day with baseball conference sweep

Thomas College spoiled the Senior Day festivities for Husson on Friday, by sweeping a North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader from the Eagles at the Winkin Complex in Bangor 7-4 in extra innings and 4-3.

In game one (9 innings)- The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a Matt Holmes (Bangor) single and a sacrifice RBI flyout by Hunter Curtis (Ellsworth), before the Terriers responded with four runs in the fifth with the big hit being a two-run double by Cam Haynes. Husson forced extra innings when Akira Warren (Hall-Dale) had an RBI single in the sixth inning, and Holmes hammered a solo homer to right in the seventh. Haynes came up big in the 10th with two outs with his second two-run double of the contest, and DJ Cagnina (Marshwood) followed with an RBI single as Thomas earned the victory to give Husson their first conference loss of the season. Haynes finished with three hits and four RBI to lead the way, while Andrew Pruell (Medomak) improved to 4-4 by picking up the pitching win in relief with 3.0 scoreless innings. Holmes (two RBI) and Warren had two hits each for the Eagles, while Allen Wheaton (John Bapst) fell to 2-2 by suffering the loss in relief on the hill.

In game two (7 innings)- Tony Meza walked with the bases loaded to force in a run in the fifth inning that ended up being the difference, as Thomas completed the sweep. Husson got within a run in the sixth on a Holmes RBI single, and had the tying run on base with one out in the last of the seventh but Ryan Bousquet popped into a double play to end it. Elijah Morton had three hits for the Terriers, while Meza had two and added three RBI. Ankit Shah (2-0) won on the mound allowing two runs over 4.2 innings. Henry Lausier (Thornton Academy) had three hits for the Eagles, Warren had two, while Colin Marshall knocked in two runs. Alex Smith (2-2) gave up three runs in 4.2 innings to take the pitching loss.

Thomas College improves to 12-17 and 8-4 in the North Atlantic Conference, while Husson drops to 18-12 and 10-2 respectively. The teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader (weather permitting) in Waterville on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
