Small College World Series- SMCC softball wins opener, nine-run inning sinks CMCC baseball

The Southern Maine Community College softball team and Central Maine Community College baseball both opened up play in the double elimination USCAA Small College World Series in Dubois, Pennsylvania on Monday.

In the softball game- Ariana Cross (John Bapst) drove in the winning run, and Sarah Wilkins was very strong in the circle as #4 seeded SMCC downed #5 Penn State Mont Alto 5-1. Cross had two hits and two RBI. Wilkins (13-4) pitched a complete game four hitter in the circle allowing just one run walking two and striking out 11. Cross had two hits and two RBI, while Wilkins also helped out with her bat with three hits and a run driven in. The Seawolves (29-6) play #1 seed Salem University (25-27) in a winners bracket game on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

In the baseball game- CMCC scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but a nine-run fifth frame sent Central Penn to a 12-6 victory in the 8 vs 9 matchup. Zach Gorman had two RBI for CM, while Logan Carpenter (Lawrence) had three hits and Garren Post (Westbrook) had two. Kyle Delano (Oak Hill) suffered the pitching loss to fall to 7-4 on the season allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4.0+ innings. The #8 seeded Mustangs (26-14) will face #6 Florida National (20-19) in an elimination game at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
