Husson University fell to #19 nationally ranked SUNY Cortland 17-7 in an elimination game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Regionals hosted by Kean University in Union, New Jersey on Saturday.
The Eagles, needing two straight wins on the day to get into the championship round on Sunday, got off to a good start. They took advantage of three walks (one with the bases loaded), a hit by pitch, and got a two-run single from Ryne Rametta to jump ahead 3-0 in the top of the first inning. The Red Dragons took over from there, tying it up in the bottom of the second highlighted by a two-run single by Lucas Granger. They took the lead for good in the third with four runs on RBI singles by Dylan Tierney and Granger, and back to back bases loaded walks to make it 7-3. Husson used three different relief pitchers in the frame. SUNY Cortland (30-12) later put five more on the board in the seventh inning to pull away.
Ryne Rametta led the Eagles with three hits and two RBI. Jackson Curtis (Ellsworth) in his final career game hit a two-run homerun. Cam Rendell also scored a pair of runs. Connor Abood (4-4), who only pitched the first inning before a rain delay in a loss to Kean on Friday, would suffer the loss on the hill allowing seven runs on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout in 2.2 innings. SUNY Cortland had five players with multiple hits and four with multiple RBI in the victory as part of a 19-hit attack. Luke Schartner had two hits and four RBI, while Granger had four knocks and drove in three. Dylan Beers (5-0) won on the mound in relief giving up no runs and no walks on two hits with six strikeouts in 3.1 innings. The Red Dragons move on to another elimination game on Saturday night against either Kean or Middlebury. Husson, the #4 seed in the regional, ends their season at 24-16 that also included their sixth straight North Atlantic Conference Championship.
Jackson Curtis, the 2025 NAC Player of the Year, ends his five year run with Husson with several program records. Curtis has the most career homeruns (33) and most career RBI (181). He also has the doubles record for one game (4), most doubles for a career (52), and most games played in a career (175). Teammate Matt Holmes (Bangor) also tied Nick Arthers for most homeruns in a single season with 11, which he hit in the loss to Kean on Friday.
