The Washington Academy softball team scored two runs in the seventh inning on Thursday, and upset Bucksport 2-1 to knock the Bucks from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Bucksport led 1-0 with two outs and nobody on base in the top of the seventh, before WA got three straight singles. On the third single, the Bucks committed an error to allow two runs to score and that was the difference in the game. Rachel Keeton had two of the four hits for the Raiders, while Grace Dennison knocked in a run. Bella Cirone pitched a complete game allowing one run on four hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts. WA improves to 10-4 on the season. Addison Harvey had two hits for Bucksport, while Natalie Simpson was also terrific in the circle in defeat. Simpson went the complete game as well giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with 17 strikeouts. The Bucks fall to 13-1. The teams meet again at Washington Academy on Monday. Only six teams in softball remain unbeaten in the state- Cheverus, York, Monmouth, PVHS, Katahdin, and Machias.
