Amanda Nelson resigns from her position; Chris Grotton named Husson interim Athletic Director

Husson University Vice President of Student Experience Chris Grotton has been named Interim Athletic Director, effective immediately the school announced on Monday.

Grotton takes over for Amanda Nelson, who resigned from her position on Friday just days after she was placed on administrative leave on her first day in the role as AD. Nelson is named as a defendant in a civil lawsuit in San Diego County stemming from a 2023 incident when she was the Del Norte High School Athletic Director. She’s accused of negligent hiring, supervision, and retention after her romantic partner, Michael Andrew Nelson, was allegedly allowed to “interact, supervise, and/or oversee students”. The lawsuit states Mr. Nelson asked a 17-year-old DNHS student to have sex with him while helping set up for a team football event. Amanda Nelson was hired on May 19 by Husson, then placed on leave on her first day on June 2.

Grotton joined Husson in September 2020, and previously served as Associate Vice President for Safety and Security. He will be serving in the role while Husson reopens its search for a new permanent Athletic Director.
