Aspen Alley did it with her arm and her bat on Wednesday, in leading Jonesport-Beals to a 12-1 Class D preliminary softball win over Schenck in a game played in East Millinocket.
Alley hit a three-run homerun and a two-run double and scored two runs, as the Royals took command early on and didn’t let up in advancing to the quarterfinals on Thursday. In the circle, Alley fired a complete game allowing one run on five hits with just one walk and 13 strikeouts.
Makayla Merchant added three hits for Jonesport-Beals, while Macie Faulkingham and Brynn Robinson each had two hits. Merchant and Riley Balicki scored three runs a piece, and Melody Gray came across to score twice. Abigaile Hutchins had the RBI for Schenck, and Hannah Ferguson took the defeat in the circle going the distance giving up 12 earned runs with 10 walks and four strikeouts. The #7 Wolverines end their season with a record of 8-7. The #10 Royals (11-4) will head to Howland on Thursday to face undefeated and #2 PVHS in the quarterfinal round.
