Hermon holds off Old Town to win first softball regional title in 10 years

Hermon built a 6-1 lead, and then withstood a late Old Town rally Tuesday afternoon to take a 6-4 win in the Class B North Softball Regional Championship game played at Pierre & Catherine Labat Softball Complex on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono.

The Hawks, trailing 1-0, jumped ahead for good 4-1 on a pair of two-run doubles by Addy Waning and Braelyn Wilcox in the bottom of the third inning. They extended it to 6-1 on a wild pitch scoring Hannah Waning in the fourth, and a RBI single by Katie Fowler in the sixth. The Coyotes made one more push in their final chance at bat in the seventh on a Natalie Fournier RBI single and a two-run error to get within a pair. The game would end when Wilcox struckout Molly Albert looking to give Hermon their first regional title since 2015.

Wilcox had two hits and two RBI for Hermon and also picked up the win in the circle. Addy Waning had two RBI, Fowler had two hits, while Hannah Waning scored twice. The Miss Maine Softball Finalist Wilcox pitched a complete game allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits with five walks and 12 strikeouts. Fournier led Old Town with two hits, two RBI, and scored two runs. Haley Sirois gave up five earned runs on eight hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in the circle. The #2 Coyotes finish as runner-up with a record of 15-4. The #1 Hawks, now 17-2, will face South Champion Medomak Valley in the Class B State Title game on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the University of Maine.
