University of Connecticut softball player to promote the importance of mental health
STORRS, Conn. – Amber Bretton, a freshman softball player at the University of Connecticut from Gorham, Maine announced today she has been named a national ambassador for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the largest grassroots mental health organization in the United States. NAMI helps provide advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental health conditions can lead better lives.
“As an athlete I am very passionate about helping athletes and other students learn more about the importance of their mental health. When I was at the Mental Edge Softball Camp last year, I learned that NAMI has tons of resources and tools to ensure that people get support. I have personally experienced the benefits of taking care of my own mental health and helping others with support. I am excited to partner with NAMI so I can continue to spread the word by promoting their programs and advocating for public policies that effectively address the challenges and stigma around mental health,” said Amber Bretton, college softball player at the University of Connecticut.
The partnership was created by Pliable Marketing, a Maine-based marketing company that specializes in athlete branding. The company’s list of athlete branding clients includes more than 35 high school, college, and professional athletes from across the country.
Bretton, 19, competes in Division I softball at the University of Connecticut. Prior to playing for the Huskies, Bretton played for Gorham High School (Gorham, ME), and several local and travel softball teams. She also participated in the Mental Edge Softball Camp last summer to help raise awareness and funds for NAMI.
As a national ambassador for NAMI, Bretton will promote the organization’s resources at NAMI.org by using her social media accounts to increase the awareness about the importance of mental health.
Bretton is represented by Pliable Marketing which provides her athlete branding services, including access to a wide range of partnership opportunities with local and national companies.
“One of Amber’s passions is promoting the importance of mental health. Knowing that, I wanted to connect her NAMI so she could share her story. It was a perfect match because NAMI understands that this is a big part of Amber’s athlete brand and that she wants to put her stake in the ground in this space and advocate for others. Amber’s outgoing personality and high-profile career as a softball player from Maine is a great combination for her to spread the word about NAMI and the importance of mental health. She wants to use her platform as a softball player to talk about mental health and support the next generation of athletes in New England and beyond,” said Greg Glynn, founder & CEO of Pliable.
