Augusta crushes Bangor in GNCBL doubleheader sweep on Thursday

The Augusta Surgin’ Sturgeon thumped the Bangor Babes on Thursday, sweeping a Greater Northeast Collegiate Baseball League seven inning doubleheader at H. Allen Ryan Field at Thomas College in Waterville by scores of 13-1 and 8-2.

In game one- Augusta scored four times in the third inning to get out to a 4-0 lead, and never trailed the rest of the day. Brady Vincent had a two-run double that turned out to be the game winner in that four run frame. Vincent and Kyle Palleschi (two-run homer) led the Surgin’ Sturgeon offense with three RBI each. Palleschi had two hits and also scored three runs. Aaron Whitman added two runs driven in, Santiago Sanchez had three hits and a RBI, while Alex Bartlett from the leadoff spot had two hits and scored twice. Sam Calder pitched a complete game (7.0 innings) allowing one run on three hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Brendan Mahaney knocked in the lone run for Bangor, and Colton Trisch suffered the loss on the mound giving up five runs in 2.0 innings of work.

In game two- Augusta scored four runs in the first inning and two more in the second to get off to a 6-0 advantage in rolling again to cap off the sweep. Sam Bradford got credited with the game winner with a RBI double in the first. TJ Kramarz had three hits and two RBI, and Vincent contributed two more runs driven in for the Surgin’ Sturgeon. Bartlett and Anthony Cooley chipped in a pair of hits each, with Bartlett also adding one RBI. Brady Harvie pitched the second complete game for his team on the day, and allowed two runs on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Jonah Baude and Evan Nadeau each had one RBI for Bangor, and Grady Vanestidine took the loss on the mound giving up five earned runs on nine hits in 2.0 innings. The Surgin’ Sturgeon improve to 7-8 and will take on the Woodworkers in Waterville next Tuesday. The Babes fall to 7-6 and will also take on Waterville on the road on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
