Cam Dostie hit a game winning and walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning on Monday evening, as #6 Central Maine upset #2 Hampden/Motor City 4-3 in the American Senior Legion Baseball Tournament at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor. With the loss, the Riverdogs are eliminated and the Hurricanes will try to win their fifth straight elimination game when they play again on Tuesday.
The Riverdogs had leads of 3-0 and 3-1 after four innings helped by a RBI single from Josh Lorenzo, an error, and a RBI groundout by Rogan Lord. Michael Hamlin brought his Hurricanes team within 3-2 with a RBI sacrifice flyout in the fifth, before Ty Bernier tied it with a RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sean Achorn, who tossed a complete game for Central Maine, retired Hampden in order in the top of the seventh. That set the stage for the bottom half, when Ben Foster and Hamlin hit back to back singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. Dostie then provided the dramatics with a groundball single to rightfield to end it.
Andrew Cote led Hampden with two hits and two runs scored, while Lorenzo had two hits and one RBI. Blake Littlefield started on the mound and allowed two runs on two hits with seven walks and seven strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Noah Kain worked a scoreless fifth, while Nykson Moors suffered the loss by giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits in 1+ inning. The Riverdogs end their season with a record of 13-4. Bernier had two hits and two RBI for Central Maine, and Sean Achorn reached base twice with a hit, a walk, and also scored twice. In his complete game on the hill, Achorn was charged for three runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts. The Hurricanes (11-8) play Trenton (11-4) in another elimination game on Tuesday, July 29th at Mansfield Stadium at 7:30 p.m. with a trip to the championship round on the line.
