The Indiana Hoosiers took advantage of eight penalty corners in the second half, scoring the go-ahead goal on a corner in the fourth quarter in holding off Maine 4-3 in non-conference field hockey action at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono on Monday.
Maine (0-2) scored the first two goals of the match, as Olivia Geniti and Saylor Kuefler both tallied in the first quarter. Indiana had the answer with a pair of markers from Celia Arroyo Cabezudo to even things before halftime. Cabezudo scored on a penalty stroke in the final minute of the opening period, then made it 2-2 just 43 seconds into the second quarter. Despite four penalty corners for the Hoosiers in the third quarter, Black Bears goalie Rozarie Mrazova made several huge saves and two shots went off the post to keep things knotted up. The guests finally broke though on a corner 2:57 into the fourth when Mijntje Hagen out front deflected a shot past Mrazova to give her team the lead for good. Freshman Molly Stutte made it 4-2 just over two minutes later with a beautiful backhanded shot inside the circle that found the cage just inside the far post. Geniti got her second goal of the game with just over five minutes left, but Maine was unable to find the equalizer. Kuefler and Geniti both had two points on the day, as Kuefler assisted on the second goal by Geniti. Mrazova made eight saves in the loss. Cabezudo (two goals), and Hagen (one goal, one assist) each had two points for Indiana. Kai Killian and Sadie Canelli combined to make four saves in net for the 1-1 Hoosiers out of the Big 10. The Black Bears return to action on Friday when they host Quinnipiac at 3 p.m.
