Maine field hockey and women’s soccer split home non-conference games

The Maine field hockey and women’s soccer teams split home non-conference games on Sunday.

In the soccer game at Mahaney Diamond- Sam Halligan scored a first half goal, and goalkeeper Aubrey Haesche stopped all nine shots on goal she faced as Holy Cross blanked Maine 1-0. The unassisted game winner by Halligan came in the 39th minute. Victoria Dungey and Jordan Pinette led the Black Bears with five shots each, both having three of those go on net. Grace Wilson made four saves. The Crusaders out of the Patriot League improve to 3-3-1. Maine, now 1-3-1, heads to UConn next Sunday to battle the Huskies at 1 p.m.

In the field hockey game at the Maine Field Hockey Complex- Eloise Penty and Martha Barratt had two goals a piece, as Maine made it two wins in a row by defeating Stonehill College 5-1. It was the first two goals of the season for Penty, who came into the contest with no points and now leads the team in scoring with seven of them after also dishing out three assists. It was also the first two goals and first points of the year for the freshman Barratt. Taylor Katsube had the other Black Bears goal. Havana De roeck had the lone marker for the Skyhawks (0-4) out of the Northeast Conference. Jayde Temby made five saves in net for Maine (2-2). The Black Bears will head to Hanover, New Hampshire on Friday to take on Dartmouth College at 3 p.m.
